Reduced synthesizers and heavy beats build the gloomy electronic background to her bright but melancholic singing voice. Her sounds blend the styles of Swedish electronic artist Annie, spooky 80s soundtracks and Ariana Grande at the peak of heartbreak. Her lyrics tell stories of heartbreak, struggle, isolation, resurrection and finding beauty in the broken. Since her first ever musical release in December 2020, Diana already conquered the stages of Hamburg’s Reeperbahn in 2021 and sang at the Dubai Expo in early 2022.

Nevertheless, not having grown up in a family of much artistic pursuit, she agreed to first complete a conventional master’s degree before fully focusing on turning her musical passion into her profession. Subsequently, she realized that there was only one path for her to wholeheartedly follow – that of her artistic expression through music. With her art, she now inspires others to follow their dreams, too, instead of choosing financial fortune over their deepest desires.

With a knack for memorable hooks and elevating the dramatic impact of a song with its final bridge, the artist quickly pulls listeners into her universe of trap beat torments and gloomy glory. Her goal is to forge “a dark, albeit coherent cosmos for anyone feeling misunderstood, hurt, lonely, or all of the above”. That – and pointing her finger and sharp-like-a-knife lyrics at injustices in society, like male privilege and sexism in the music industry. All of her music is birthed through the creative spark between her and her piano, then later forged into a complete song with the help of a diverse and international team of songwriters and co-producers.

Coming out stronger, in the end, she invites listeners to embrace their respective dark sides, sit in the feeling with her and blossom together… even in the dark. But even beyond her musical ventures, Diana Goldberg strives to empower those around her. She believes that we are on the path to equality “when people never stop learning and having an open mind”. “The key to change is also to know that you are privileged – and use that to help others, not just stay in that situation and remain privileged”, Diana reflects in her interview with music is her passion co-founder and podcast host of Gleich & Gleicher, Mia Heresch. In fact, taking a bad thing, be it a memory, feeling or attribute, and turning it into a superpower seems to be in Diana’s DNA. Even when designing her own merchandise, Diana Goldberg turned gruesome to beautiful when she incorporated eerie jellyfish – an animal she herself used to fear – in a beautiful flowery design.

Diana turns struggles into strides forward, always sticking to her guns. She recalls moments of discouragement, for instance, when those close to her deemed her goal like performing at the Grammy Music Awards unrealistic and a waste of time to pursue. Her response? Work hard to prove them wrong. “I am a fighter, and I am very ambitious. I thought to myself: I will prove to everyone that it is possible for a German artist to be a winner and be recognized in the international music scene at the same time.” Since then, a will to prove doubtful minds wrong accompanies Diana Goldberg on her way to the top. And with her music, she inspires others to follow suit.

In the “Questionnaire” section, artists answer a total of 15 questions related to the topic of music. Additionally, they are given another task: to take a music-related photo or to draw or write something with a pencil. This time, it’s with Diana Goldberg.

First CD:

Off the Wall – Michael Jackson

First concert:

Mando Diao – I still wear the merchandise I bought at that concert to this day!!

Earliest childhood memory related to music:

My grandmother was a well-known singer and actress in the former Soviet Union. Music and theater were like breathing for her – there was never a moment when I didn’t hear her singing or humming. Nowadays, my friends and family catch me constantly humming and singing to myself. I don’t even notice it anymore – it happens subconsciously. Apparently, my grandmother has had such a strong influence on me and inspired me so much that I’ve taken it from her. She remains my first and most important inspiration to make music and express my creativity through it.

Current favorite song:

I listen to so many different songs, and it’s hard for me to pick just one favorite. Currently, I have “Bad Girl” by Daya on repeat.

Most embarrassing favorite song:

“Fairytale Gone Bad” by Sunrise Avenue – hey, this song unleashes powers in me when I’m cleaning at home!

Personal favorite song:

“BLOSSOM IN THE DARK”

Favorite song lyric:

“stuck in a maze that I made, it’s amazing, all this pain that I crave I’m inhaling” (from “DRIPPING IN MY BLOOD”)

Best own concert:

My EP release concert in Berlin and the support shows for Alice Merton were my best own concerts. It was so amazing; my EP had only been out for a few days, and at the support show in Friedrichshafen, the entire front row sang along perfectly (!) to all the lyrics of my already released and especially new songs. It made me very emotional, in a good way. I can’t wait to play at Superbloom next and see what happens there!

Vinyl, CD, or mp3?

Mp3, although vinyl would be sexy if I had a record player!

Download or stream?

Stream!

Club concert or festival?

It’s difficult, it depends on the mood. At festivals, I love that I can listen to or discover multiple artists at the same time. At club concerts, I like the intimate vibe. You get so close to the artist and get to know them up close, not just through the songs but also through the performance and show. When it comes to my own shows, I’m really into festivals right now – it’s so nice to be able to play in front of so many people and see the crowd singing along and vibing to my lyrics.

Three songs that must not be missing on my mixtape:

“End of the Road” – Noga Erez

“Something in the Way” – Jorja Smith

“My My My! (Acoustic)” – Troye Sivan

An album I definitely wouldn’t take to a deserted island:

Anything Schlager. Absolutely not. Before concerts, we always send a tech and catering rider to the local organizer – a kind of information booklet so that the organizer can prepare for the band. As a joke, alongside our food preferences and allergies, we wrote that we wanted a booster pack of “Magic The Gathering” trading cards – even though none of us are into trading cards. We just wanted to see if anyone would actually read and respond to such specific requests. Long Story Short – at one of our concerts this year in Reutlingen, there were suddenly 5 booster packs of the card game ready for us backstage. We were completely overwhelmed and could hardly believe that Michael – who is still the only one(!) – actually got these packs for us. We not only had an amazing show but also a great memory of Michael’s hospitality and willingness to go all the way to fulfill all our wishes – shoutout to you and the Flamingo Artspace Crew!!

With the song, Diana processed her own experience with her ex-partner’s infidelity and the subsequent self-doubt. Precisely because the song is so personal, the young artist took two years before she wanted to share it with the public.
Diana’s electro-pop is versatile: While her single “Game Over” is dominated by a bassline, with bright synthesizers unfolding particularly at the end, her latest single “Parasite,” released in collaboration with Tokyo Project, starts with dark synths and is reminiscent of The Weeknd.

In contrast to “Parasite,” “Same old Sorry” has a more stripped-down sound, allowing the message to take even more center stage. You can experience how this comes across on stage, among other places, at c/o pop in Cologne.

Personal and honest songs about non-ubiquitous topics – that’s what singer-songwriter Diana Goldberg sings about. With her music, she addresses taboo subjects like mental health or workplace abuse.

Singer Diana Goldberg is an open and optimistic person. Nevertheless, she prefers to sing about the darker sides of people. With her songs, she tackles subjects that others would label as taboo.

“The fears and thoughts in one’s head lose power when you speak them out.”

Diana Goldberg in an interview with Sound of Munich

All of the musician’s songs are born at the piano. She improvises on the keys and searches for fitting melodies. In just a few minutes, a new song comes to life. Her music usually emerges from situations where she tries to understand her own perspective or that of another person.

Diana Goldberg doesn’t want to judge anyone and always aims to present the whole situation. After this initial step on the path to a new song, she meets her producer. Together, they develop the beat, produce it collaboratively, and finally, complete the song together.

The Personal Challenge as a Goal

The singer-songwriter aims to remain as open as possible with her music. She writes her songs with the goal of bringing herself joy. Her music inspires her to rethink things, and the songs are meant to help her become a more open person. At the same time, she processes her daily life through her music. The singer uses her music to challenge herself.

FYI – A Song About Sexual Harassment

In Diana Goldberg’s song FYI, the theme is workplace harassment. Before releasing the track, the singer was nervous because the song is personal and honest to her. For this reason, she initially didn’t want to share “FYI” with the world.

However, she did release the song because she wants to use her music to help others and make their lives easier.

BLACKBLUEYELLOW

The song that makes the musician proudest is BLACKBLUEYELLOW, which she released at the end of July. The song is about perfectionism, a topic that has preoccupied her for a long time. The singer herself struggles with her own high standards. With BLACKBLUEYELLOW, Diana Goldberg wanted to package her own feelings as honestly as possible.

“Better, better, better, best. You always have to become better and better than you already are; it’s never good enough as you are right now.”
Diana Goldberg in an interview with Sound of Munich

This leads to one’s own thoughts destroying themselves and eventually leaving bruises, according to Diana. Hence the name of the song: the colors represent bruises. Even though it wasn’t easy for the songwriter to write this song, she thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Her Pre-Performance Ritual

Diana Goldberg’s Crew consists of her closest friends, which creates a strong sense of camaraderie. Before the performance, they each have their moment of solitude, a moment of calm before the storm. They gather in a circle and cherish the fact that it’s about the team rather than the music and the songs. They look into each other’s eyes and feel the unity, knowing they can achieve anything together.

2021 was good, 2022 will be better

The year 2021 was full of surprises for the musician. She entered the year with no expectations and couldn’t imagine what lay ahead. Her songs made it into major playlists, such as the New Music Friday Playlist. Additionally, she performed at the Reeperbahn Festival and had the opportunity to perform in front of large audiences. Her next single won’t be released in January, as expected, but in February. This time, it will have a different sound than what we’re used to from her. Furthermore, we can look forward to her EP and merchandise. So, we are eager to see what the year 2022 has in store for the singer-songwriter.

They are now an integral part of Munich’s stages. But how did the musicians get their start? For the Young People’s Page, artists have delved into their photo albums. Today: Diana Goldberg.

In the beginning, there were ear piercings. At least that’s what Diana Goldberg talks about when asked about her musical beginnings. The ear piercings, which the musician desperately wanted as a child, were allowed by her parents on one condition: if she won a piano competition, she could get them. With the promise of that reward in mind, Diana practiced hard – and she won. Her journey with music continued, of course. Initially, it involved piano and classical pieces, but very soon, Diana ventured to the microphone. She began making music with her brother, then performed with different groups or as a solo artist. During her stays abroad, including in Leeds, she continued to work on her own lyrics and her voice. Since completing her Master’s degree in nutrition science, she has been focusing on music. In collaboration with producer Joseph Feinstein, whom she has known since her youth, she released the single “All Or Nothing” in February. Many more are set to follow. She’s no longer working towards ear piercings; instead, she participates in song competitions and was even among the finalists for the Band of the Year 2020 by the SZ Young People’s Page.

Music is also the freedom to dare something new. And that it’s worth undergoing change is something Diana Goldberg, 25, can tell you a lot about. The musician released the single “Occupy Your Mind” last Friday, marking the first step in a new direction, in collaboration with Berlin-based producer Joseph Feinstein. The song electrifies, captivates with its almost mysteriously intricate beat, and the voice that seems to hover over the tones. While listening, you often find yourself in the familiar and yet constantly surprised: new notes, a change in vocal tone, loud, soft, fast, slow. Only seconds in between.

The idea for the song goes back to an encounter that is a bit in the past, underlining what is important to Diana in songwriting: empathy. At a friend’s birthday, she meets a young woman with narcissistic traits, “who constantly wanted to be in the spotlight,” says Diana. Interacting with her proves to be complicated, and tears flow from the young woman. Diana tries to put herself in her shoes, to understand how the woman must feel and think, even to somehow protect her. These considerations gave rise to “Occupy Your Mind”; the title itself could be from the “perspective of a narcissist.”

However, before Diana starts writing lyrics, she often begins with harmonies. She thinks from the sound, from the instrument. Diana comes from a Russian-German family. She took piano lessons from a young age – with a certain amount of discipline and ambition. As she grew older, she created more and more freedom in music. First, she moved away from the scores, began experimenting and songwriting, transitioned from her brother’s band to singing, and meandered through the Munich music scene. “When I heard myself on the radio for the first time, a dream came true,” she says. Her sound gradually evolved.

About a year ago, Diana completed her Master’s in Health Studies, and since then, she has been focusing on music. The pandemic has only strengthened her commitment, giving her the opportunity to focus even more. After negative experiences with producers, she found a reliable partner in Joseph. She says, “We just have our sound.” The song “Occupy Your Mind” was nominated for the German Songwriting Awards in the Pop category. More singles are set to follow after this one. Diana says, “2021 is going to be an awesome year.”
